Related to another topic 'WvW strategy: Things to work on' where combos and the like are discussed. True a fight would fare better in our advantage if players knew the combos and complemented each other. However this is rarely the case as most of them join out of the blue.
A solution suggested would be to train them in using combos. I believe this isn't viable, 'training' them just isn't viable. You cannot bring 10 let along 5 people out to the fields to practice combos expecting them to maintain undivided attention. This is a game, not a military simulation. And hence the solution has to take that into account.
My suggestion, using the PvP wing of the server. Having guilds who wish to train their military arm to bring it to the PvP server. Friendly matches on normally empty arenas. This serves two purposes, one it teaches them to work together and listen to officers, two it cultivates cohesion and trust. Trust can make a big difference between charging into an enemy and waiting in the back. If a warrior/guardian trusts that his warband is with him, is he not more likely to charge into battle to take the punishing initial blow for his team or take down as many with him for bragging rights.
This does not necessarily have to be PvP server alone. Having the whole guild participate in friendly keg brawls, having inter-guild matches would serve the same purpose, building trust. And in the end, fight or flee, doesn't it all boil down to knowing whether your own efforts would be wasted or forgotten because your pick-up-group warband is running from the fight?
