Referring to the topic posted, I would just like to see what the general opinion is on having units for unique field roles. Examples of this would be single to small teams running reconnaissance, bombardiers with artillery piece operators and spotters in a single unit, teams running dolyak escort and logistics, infiltration units of mesmers and thiefs to sit in castles opening portals for a backdoor takeover, etc.
Back in Kaineng, scouts were an essential arm of the spearhead. Whenever there was a scout on a hill or cliff, a Devona's Rest zerg-rush would not be far behind. Zerging may not need be part of our reportoire however I believe 'knowing is half the battle' in itself.
More often than not people operating trebuchets have to rely on map shouts, random shouts, commander shouts and at most jumbled party chats to discern targets. Back on the field, my role from time to time was that of a spotter, giving feedback to the trebuchet to ensure that weak walls were being hit, cows covered the center of zergs, and that overall the trebuchet effectively hit targets with a higher profile than a deer.
I'll leave the importance of the other two for later but for now I wish to gauge the general opinion on this.

For tier three and up wuv-wuv servers? Unit roles are essentially. For our server? Not so much.
On a good day we're lucky to have an organized group of twenty-five players or more in the Eternal Battlegrounds; assigning specific unit roles to them when many aren't that experienced with the game would just be wasting time. The community boards and TeamSpeak servers are a start for getting more organized, but we'll need at least three more months before we seriously start considering implementing unit roles for our players.

They do not need to be formalized units. I am only suggesting that our rag-tag militia of everyday Joes be given roles by the commanders they so choose to follow. Roles that are usually overlooked or do not have anyone actively assigned to it. Trebuchet spotters for one. Forward reconnaissance is another.
If we know the zerg rush is coming, we know we are outnumbered, but we also play their greed against them, with spotters a zerg can be brought within long range artillery and splattered with cows.
