In this thread we will bitch discuss about the current problems with the Glicko-2 rating system and how it has fucked us over paired us with Sorrow's Furnace. A terrific explanation about the general Glicko rating system can be read here (tl;dr: It's for chess and go, not WvW.) The question I want to ask to spark discussion is whether or not Sorrow's Furnace truly is the only server that can be paired with Fergie's Cross and ET for the least amount of carnage. Some have argued that Henge of Denravi would be a better pairing for tier eight, others have even gone as far to claim that Sorrow's Furnace deserves to be in tier six. Thoughts? Opinions?

SF does have the people for Tier 6, but honestly, we have the heart for Tier 1. To be fair, every server has the heart for tier one; unfortunately, even an Olympic cyclist will lose in a knife-fight against six chain-smokers. I'm not going to make the same bitch that "SF ES OP ANET PLS NERF" that goes on everyday at the "official" forums. I mean, come on, we've all encountered that group of ten or so Furnace fuck-ups that try to take a tower by auto-attacking the gates without siege. It's obvious that with the same numbers as our server on the battlefield, green team Charlie Sheen would be outplayed every day. But would Henge of Denravi still be a good match for our server to play against?

From what I understand, we fought SF hard the first few weeks. We also had more people and more guilds then. That's the story ANet spoon-feeds us every time we complain about Sorrow's Furnace being paired with us. "You guys fought hard the first week and beat them; you can do it again!" What really happened was that the top wuv-wuv guilds on green team got depressed with being moved down from tier seven to eight and just decided not to participate in battle for that week. Guesting and server transfer costs were to be implemented the following week, and ANet had promised us that a soft reset would be enforced in order to reverse the damage that bandwagoning had caused. In Furnace's mind, what was the point of even trying for that final week? But then, of course, ANet never did implement that soft reset. And Charlie Sheen suddenly appeared on the Eternal Battlegrounds, his cocky smile etched across his cheeks, chuckling to us, "Wanna'play?"

anet never promised a soft reset, i dont think they even know what the term means...
they were planning a hard reset. and rightfully cancelled... it wouldve really upset the pairing balance they put so much time into achieving. unfortunately the wvw team is clueless to their options to modify the rating system (whether its against the design intent for the system or not, intervening in the ratings every once in a while would be a VERY good thing with a 24 player pool).
since the reset fiasco they havent said a single word about glicko. i think its a really sore thumb and theyve been told to stfu on the subject or face repercussions.

Not that wvw and basketball have much in common, but Florida Gulf Coast is in the process of proving that you actually have to make the match to find out if someone's worthy of it. Every year there's a story like that, and it's why people love the NCAA tournament even if basketball isn't normally their thing.
I don't think anyone who's really looked at this believes that this is and has been the best possible matchup for us. The fact that nobody has any direct information about tier 7 vs 8 is what's wrong with the system. Good matchmaking is about information gain, and there is a lot of information to be gained by mixing tiers 7 and 8, and none to be gained by making the same match over and over again for...wow, are we about to enter the fourth month? Glicko itself is fine, but the way they're applying it is a bit off. It's not even off by that much, really; there are some relatively easy things to try. I think they're afraid of being expected to endlessly tweak the algorithm when it doesn't produce perfect results for what amounts to a relatively small portion of the playerbase.
That said, I think we're a lot more beat up than we were three months ago, and the tier 7 servers have all been doing pretty well from being in a healthy matchup. But complex things will happen when the matchup actually changes, so it's anybody's guess.

I remember reading a suggestion that instead of utilizing Glicko-2, WvW tier rankings should be determined weekly by third and first places within each tier. Should Furnace be in first place within tier eight this week and Denravi in third place within tier eight the same week, their positions will be swapped. If anything, it would definitely keep wuv-wuv rankings much more dynamic, but would it be efficient?

I think ppl are well aware of my ranting about this on the GW2 forums but now i can do it here put a 850-900 minimum rating on the system. A "Floor" as it is commonly referred to would be all sf needs to get out and any other future team that lands in T8 and deserves a shot at T7. Also its an easy implemented system (Anet wont have to do much to put it in place) this not only fixes the current situation but all future cases of this. A reset to 1500 rating for all servers will do more harm than good. Just imagine if we go paired with JQ! also imagine the "Bitching" that T1-2-3 servers would do (proof of this is why they didn't reset the ratings to 1500 in the 1st place) but the biggest problem with a 1500 reset is eventually we will be back in this position of T8 having a 300-400 point gap. if anyone can find a reason why a 850-900 rating Floor is NOT a good way to go. Post it and quote this post i would like to see if anyone has and better ideas Edit: BTW (off topic a bit) i have a feeling NSP is coming to T8??? have a look at the current machup i thought HOD or GOM would come down but it looks like by the time SF gets enough rating NSP will be at the bottom of T7.
